Germaine Acogny, the "mother of African contemporary dance," is one of Africa’s most influential artists. A pioneer in blending traditional West African dance with European influences, she created the Acogny Technique, which has shaped contemporary dance worldwide. With over 50 years of performing and teaching, the 80-year-old dance icon received the Golden Lion for Dance at the 2021 Venice Dance Festival for her lifetime achievements.

Greta-Marie Becker studied theater, film, and media studies, international development, and gender studies in Vienna, and later directing at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne. She has taught film and video art at the University of San Francisco de Quito, and has been involved in non-university education and cultural work in the Andes and the Amazon rainforest. Her first documentary was THE WHISPER OF THE MARIMBA (2020). Her newest film, GERMAINE ACOGNY – THE ESSENCE OF DANCE (2025), has been selected for Filmfest München.
