For many years, Italy has suffered from a dysfunctional government, mafia infiltration, and widespread corruption. The country is on the verge of financial breakdown. Enter Italian comedian, Beppe Grillo.Grillo’s protest movement, Movimento, sets out to install di- rect democracy and revolutionize the political system from within. In February 2013, they win 25% of the Italian vote and send 163 new and completely inexperienced senators to Parliament. The vote tips the balance between left and right and Grillo’s movement gains a potentially crucial role in relation to the future of Italy and Europe and to the future of democracy as we know it.
