The town of Lahore was a center of musical culture - until music was considered sinful under Sharia law in 1977. Musicians were partly vilified and music was banned into private homes. After restrictions eased, an amazing recording of “Take Five” goes viral and several Pakistani musicians are invited by jazz legend Wynton Marsalis to perform at Lincoln Center. Andy Schocken and Academy awarded Sharmeen Obaid tell a different kind of story about Pakistan – a story about its people, not its politics and how music has the ability to bring people together across cultural divides.
Remember the culture clash in The Gods Must Be Crazy? This time it´s real. One of the most ancient cultures on our planet is undergoing a major change. The Ju/Hoansi Bushmen in Namibia are not allowed to hunt anymore and need to converge with our so called “civilized” lifestyle. For the first time the Ju/Hoansi Bushmen travel through the Kalahari and then right into the heart of Europe. What starts as a look at their fascinating culture becomes an even more fascinating look on our Western lifestyle. A warm and humorous reflexion of our habits through the eyes of people who are about to give up their million year old traditions.
By 2050, the world population will grow to ten billion people. In the middle of the heated debate about food security, comes this broad and analytic look into the enormous spectrum of global food production and distribution - from artificial meat, insects, industrial farming to trendy self-cultivation. Director, best-selling author and Food Fighter Valentin Thurn (box office hit Taste The Waste) seeks for solutions worldwide and gives place for innovation and visions for our future.
How power works in the Chinese Communist Party, focused through the mission of one local mayor who is determined to transform the coal-mining centre of Datong into a tourism haven (showcasing clean energy). In order to revitalize the city, he must first destroy. With remarkable access, the film follows him out and about facing battles on the street, mostly mostly from within the Communist party itself.
